Letter from Alumni President Mark W. Bernecker

Good day, fellow Alumni!

This school year has had a fantastic start! If you have not had an opportunity to participate in recent Alumni events, please come out and join us. Your Alumni Society has a variety of events planned throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing you.

Our Alumni Society board members are goal-driven and filled with enthusiasm. To start, we have re-launched the membership dues structure with exciting new opportunities at every level. We have set a goal of 700 members (hopefully we’ll welcome many more) for a new high.

The Alumni Society sponsors lots of programs. Career Connections continues to benefit students and Alumni looking for a first job or making a transition.

We welcomed into our midst our own Alumni House during Homecoming in October! The house’s prime location at 220 Prince Drew is right behind the scoreboard of POMOCO Stadium. And this fall, we raffled off a car! Thank you to Mike and Patty Martin for donating the Chevy HHR.

The annual Alumni Society/Oyster Pointer 5K Race and Mile Walk on Sept. 16 was a big success. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all of our participants, sponsors and especially to our volunteers! And, we continued our 50/50 raffle at every home game.

So where does the money go? Proceeds this year will be used for scholarships, the Capital Campaign for the Alumni House and support for various CNU campus needs such as the Emergency Relief Fund.

I am privileged to work for our beloved Alumni Society this year as one of several Alumni ambassadors on the Board that will serve your interests at Christopher Newport University. Our Board is committed to making a powerful impact on the CNU campus and playing a major role in the life of the University. This school is growing, and growing despite modest Alumni participation. As a Board, we need your participation. And if you are looking for a way to volunteer your time, we are seeking your help!

My line of communication is open to you; this Board is open to you. We are volunteering our time because we feel very passionate about this University, and we want to be part of shaping this fine institution.

It would be great to hear your CNU story! I will be the first to share mine. CNU changed my life.

Yours in CNU,

Mark
