Alumni Profile
Orlando Mullins
(Class of '88)
By Andrea Evans
Orlando Mullins has made a name for himself in the music industry – Double O Entertainment. His full management company provides artist development, management and promotion. Along the way to becoming chief executive officer, he has been responsible for world tours featuring acclaimed rhythm and blues, hip hop and jazz artists. He was a top executive for a multimillion-dollar recording company affiliate of Black Entertainment Television and managed a long list of artists including Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Jaared.
“I think the rap and hip-hop music out now is too negative for our children,” Mr. Mullins says. To try to correct that, he tours the country to find artists then grooms them for major recording deals by creating their image, producing their music, preparing them and marketing them to major labels.
Mr. Mullins has been a motivated leader since high school. In addition to graduating with honors and maintaining a basketball scholarship throughout college, he was a founding member of Kappa Alpha Psi, the first black fraternity on the Christopher Newport College campus. His CNU marketing degree helped him quickly advance in a sales career to regional representative for Moet/Hennessy. Then Mr. Mullins combined his love of sales and music with an ability to motivate himself and others and formed Double O Entertainment.
Mr. Mullins loves his work – the people, connections, excitement and possibilities. He complains only about the long nights, but even that schedule has benefits. As CEO of the management/record label, Mr. Mullins has time with his wife, Dayna, and four children at their home in Washington, D.C. “Everyone wants to record in the wee hours of the morning. I hate that, but I love this job. Wouldn’t trade it. I’m actually home all day with my children, and I am loving it!”
Mr. Mullins’ abundance of good memories of CNU includes his involvement with Kappa Alpha Psi and having the privilege of playing with a squad from what he considers the best era of CNU basketball!
